Four lessons that begin with a September piece of literature to motivate and engage students. (How I Spent My Summer Vacation, Johnny Appleseed, Brand New Pencils Brand New Books, Arthur’s Family Summer Vacation) Lesson plans are included for each topic. Writings are narrative and informative. With each lesson there is a grammar lesson and practice. Ex. Students read How I Spent My Summer Vacation. They then as a group practice dictating sentences about vacation. Introducing the connecting word AND students practice putting sentences together. Example: We went to the beach and swam in the ocean. Next they gather ideas using the graphic organizers provided. The final step is to edit before they create their final writes. I like to collect all student pieces and then put them in a class book for all to have fun reading. All materials are provided as well as extensive lesson plans.

Students will write about apples, leaves, school and football. The graphic organizers are wonderful for helping students organize their thoughts. I’m a firm believer that if students know what they want to say it makes taking the chance of writing easier and well created.

This is a favorite of mine. Both writing lessons are perfect for showcasing student writing. They include informational text, prewriting pages, suggestion for editing and finally a page for writing. Both the scarecrow and Johnny Appleseed are perfect for topping the paper.
