First Day Jitters

I never get tired of reading this story to my class at the beginning of the year. It is a nice “ice breaker” to let them know that even teachers get a “little” nervous. I also like this story because it leads into talking about emotions. Some students seem leery to say they are nervous or scared but simple things in our life can cause these emotions and that is nothing to be ashamed of!! I suggest using this that first week of school as it provides opportunities for text to self and discussing how we all felt about returning to school. Because it includes vocabulary, word work, writing, and comprehension activities it fits perfectly with you literacy portion of the day and the story is ideal for Guided Reading. I also like the data collection activities. A way to embed a little math with your literacy.
