February Themed Guided Writing Lessons

I used writing journals in my classroom but never felt like students were making progress. They made the same mistakes over and over and I never saw what we were learning in grammar being used in their writing. And then there was the debate … should students edit their work, correct spelling? After feeling frustrated over and over I created these guided writing lessons. 1. Each lesson begins with a literature story to stimulate ideas for writing. 2. There are paragraph organizers so students can put their ideas into logical and meaningful text. (How many times have you heard “I like chocolate. It is good. I like it a lot. It is so good.” ) These organizers encourage students to write a paragraph that actually shares information. 3. By introducing grammar with the writing you can encourage use of it in their stories. 4. Students create a first write, edit it with the teacher, parent helper, self. I always made sure I met with each student or corrected first writes at home and then conferenced with those needing support. 5. The students then prepare a final write that they can be proud of and that is written with the objectives you are trying to teach. 6. We always made a class book using the final writes and it was always the first book chosen to read during free choice!! By looking at the examples below you will see that there are also leveled activities so you can meet the need of every writer in your classroom. If you save student writing from month to month you will love the progress you see the students making! February topics are How to Make a Valentine, My Teacher for President, Groundhog, Dental Health.

I LOVE this resource. There are facts about each president for students to sort and compare and contrast. These are followed by these adorable craft “page toppers”. There are a number of graphic organizers for you or your students to choose from and then differentiated final write pages for students to write and then display their craft. What a wonderful writing experience and then a perfect way to decorate your room or showcase student writing.

This resource is perfect for writing “how to” stories. There is vocabulary with pictures and a number of differentiated sequence pages for students to choose from that will support their writing. End the writing assignment with having students create a Valentine.
