Soon after school begins I like to begin a Family Themed Unit. This is another way to find out more information about your class and they certainly enjoy sharing. By using the suggested literature here it is perfect to embed this theme into your Guided Reading lessons.
Love Week Three with its Family theme. Four delightful stories are used: The Family Book, Me and My Family Tree, How to Read to A Grandma and Grandpa, The Classroom Family. Each day includes complete lesson plans, a welcome activity (to work on while waiting for everyone to arrive and get started) story for guided reading, vocabulary, anchor charts, comprehensionactivities, word work, writing, themed (week one back to school) activity or craft, math games(related to skills learning in math). Many of the pages offered are differentiated to meet the needs of different academic levels. This week’s focus will be title, author, illustrator and now we add story discussion. Everything you need for the day will be included in the resource but the story itself. They can be found in the library or purchased and you can begin your classroom library. Each week will have 4 stories leaving day 5 for catch up, make up or your own idea. So let’s get started taking a PEEK! And then look at all the other wonderful resources for Family.

This wonderful resource contains vocabulary, word work, writing, informational text, activities and even literature suggestions with activities.

This simple but meaningful story The Family Book by Todd Parr is perfect for a guided reading lesson about family. I find it valuable for teaching vocabulary, starting discussion about What is a Family and providing an opportunity for students to share about their family.

If you enjoyed Me on the Map by Joan Sweeney and Annette Cable you will also enjoy Me and My Family Tree. With simple text and adding one concept at a time the story supports students in understanding and building a family tree. Part of understanding family is understanding who make up a family. Building a family tree is a nice visual for a young child. Just like all families are different so will each students family tree be unique.

There are some things we want to remember forever!! In the story Memory Jars by Vera Brosgal, Freda finds a way to save some of here favorite memories. This story is the perfect read aloud for students who have lost a pet or a friend that moved away, for teachers celebrating the end of the school year with students, summer memories, lessons about how we share things with family or any time a student is “frustrated by a good thing being over too soon.” In the story Freda goes blueberry picking with her gran and then they make jam. What fun making memories with our grandparents or family.

This book companion is the perfect partner for the family theme. Students will discover that the classroom can be their “happy place” and you can create a wonderful “class family” bulletin board.

Our School is a Family is the perfect opportunity to introduce all those special people who work in your building to support each other. I love taking pictures of all these helpers and posting an Our School is a Family photo board. There are frames and a title for you to use. This is also the perfect lead into teaching about the community!

Bundle these up and SAVE!
And we can’t forget Grandparents Day! and our Grandparents. (September 10th in 2023) This resource has everything you need to celebrate and to learn more about our Grandparents. Learning more about grandparents fits perfectly with the family unit as we talk about GENERATIONS!

These three book companions are perfect to accompany the Grandparent theme. They are filled with activities for Guided Reading lessons or to fill your literacy lessons.
