Week 20 Polar and Arctic Animal Study

Icy glaciers, the Arctic Ocean with sea ice, and tundra, or flat plains with no trees, make up the Arctic habitat. These are not easy conditions to survive in but there is life. Your class will enjoy studying some of these animals. Let’s take a peek at the resources that will provides opportunities for your class to study this frozen life.

Amazing winter bundle for research, reading, word work and writing. Crafts and vocabulary are added as well. “BUNDLE UP” for a 20% savings. Look below for details on each resource.

This study explores 11 different Arctic Animals as well as a quick look at Penguins. It begins with vocabulary for posting. These can also be used for ABC order or daily study. Word Work follows the vocabulary which is perfect for a deeper understanding of each word. There are plentiful literature suggestions and for six of my favorites there are comprehension activities to follow. These selections are ideal for Guided Reading. Moose by Munsch, If It’s Snowy and You Know it Clap Your Paws by Kim Norman, Three Snow Bears by Jan Brett, Mama Do You Love Me by Joosse, Over in the Arctic by Berkes and Tacky by Lester.

Each of the 12 animals have a full page of information for reading. Students can highlight key facts and vocabulary. There is a full page picture of the animal. These are followed by two graphic organizers for students to gather key information about the animal. Finally there are differentiated final write pages for reporting. For further research there is a mini book with all animals included as well as several pages for collecting facts. I like to have each child pick an animal to research and provide the materials for them. At the end of our study students report on their animal. Finally there are pages on the Inuit population. Crafts include a walrus, polar bear and Arctic researcher.

I like to partner this resource up with this amazing story by Jan Brett, Cozy. It is an amazing story about a Musk Ox in the bitter cold. Animals hope Cozy will help keep them warm. The book companion has comprehensions pages, pictures, informational text, graphic organizers and even some math games with an Arctic theme.

This resource is perfect for a day long study of Polar Bears. There is informational text, vocabulary, word work, paragraph organizers, final write pages, pictures, and an adorable page topper or if you prefer wear a headband for the day. There are even some math games with a polar bear theme. So much fun. I like to spend the week on the Arctic research, one of those days being all about polar bear and another full day on penguins.

For Guided Reading this wonderful book companion by Jan Brett, The Three Snow Bears is fabulous. So much information to be gained from a fiction story AND fun to compare and contrast The Three Snow Bears to Goldilocks. Great comprehension strategies. For science there is also a comparison of Polar Bears and Brown Bears. Perfect for critical thinking.

While you are studying animals found on the North Pole take a trip to the Southern Pole and look at this adorable group of birds!! Like with the Polar Bears there are plenty of activities for a full day of meaningful learning covering ALL the bases.

Who can study penguins without reading Tacky!!? You will love this book companion and the activities encourage recall, sequencing and taking a look at the personalities of individual characters.
