Eileen Christelow brings laughter and charm to her beloved Five Little Monkeys stories, and this engaging resource brings those stories to life in your classroom!

Students will love the included monkey craft (boy and girl in pajamas) along with themed pieces perfect for story retelling and hands-on learning. The resource is filled with word work, writing and comprehension making it ideal for the Guided Reading portion of your day.

To enhance your “monkey unit” you will find an adorable monkey boy and girl. I love making them at the beginning of the unit so that they can be displayed and enjoyed throughout the studies. There is also a class poll about “if you could not jump on the bed would you rather read or play outside. To end the unit there are activities for favorite story, monkey characteristics and new idea for a monkey story.

There are 16 colorful vocabulary cards for posting with pictures to support reading and writing. They can be used for ABC order or syllables. Word work is plentiful with Word Search Parts of Speech Word Endings Rhyming Words Syllables “Hunks and Chunks” (oo and ea). These can be used independently, in centers or as a whole group.

Begin with “Jumping on the Bed“. Print, cut and place the adorable pictures in a center for students to retell the story. Comprehension incudes many differentiated activities. I love the sequencing and retell as they have cut and paste activities with pictures to support early readers.

What would you do on a beautiful sunny day? The monkeys went on a picnic but they scare mama when they tease the crocodiles. Again there are adorable monkeys and background to place in a center, both black and white and color for students to interact with. Comprehension includes using text to define “teasing” sequencing and story recall.

These playful monkeys can get into a great deal of trouble baking a cake. Again there are differentiated retell and sequencing pages for multiple levels of learners and an opportunity for students to create a birthday cake special to them.

The monkeys can be helpful as well and activities that follow include differentiated “how to” activities for washing a car. For you artistic students they can also decorate a car.

Do you enjoy shopping? The monkeys do but they “wander off“. This story has lots of opportunity for text to self. What would you shop for? What did the monkeys shop for? Do you enjoy shopping? There is also a page for sorting shopping decisions: silly, healthy and useful.

And if you are bored what would you do? What did the monkeys do? Students will enjoy the “silly ending”. Again activities encourage discussion and making comparisons.

This resource includes so many activities that are simple to complete yet encourage critical thinking and problem solving as well as allowing for creativity.
