Clomp, Wiggle, Shake, Clap! A Favorite Fall Read-Aloud Comes to Life!

October 18, 2026 No Comments

Who’s afraid of a little spooky fun? Not the Little Old Lady!

One of my favorite fall read-alouds is The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything by Linda Williams. This delightful story is filled with repetition, silly sounds, movement, and a clever ending that young learners absolutely LOVE!

I’ve updated my book companion with even more opportunities to bring this wonderful story to life through literacy, writing, crafts, and math!

Read It, Retell It, and Act It Out!

Imagine your classroom filled with students clomping, wiggling, shaking, clapping, nodding, and shouting BOO!

That’s what makes this story so much fun!

Students begin by sharing their own experiences with being afraid before meeting the brave Little Old Lady. As the story unfolds, they join in with sounds and movements, predict what might happen next, and discover how the Little Old Lady solves her unusual problem.

Using picture cards, students sequence and retell the story, explore character traits, identify the main idea, and discuss an interesting question: Was the Little Old Lady really afraid of nothing?

One of my favorite activities is the Reader’s Theater! Students become part of the story through choral reading, expressive voices, and actions. What a wonderful way to build reading fluency, confidence, and comprehension while having FUN!

More Than Just a Read-Aloud!

This updated resource includes TWO days of suggested lesson plans and plenty of activities to extend learning throughout the week.

Students can explore spooky sounds, practice vocabulary and word work, complete differentiated comprehension activities, organize their thoughts for writing, and create a scarecrow!

And there’s math, too! Class polls and graphing activities encourage students to collect and compare data, while partner games such as Roll, Add, Win! and Spin a Scarecrow make practicing math skills exciting.

So Many Choices, So Much Learning!

As a former first-grade teacher, I know that every classroom is different. That’s why I love creating resources that offer choices!

The two-day lesson plans provide a starting point, but there are plenty of additional activities for small groups, literacy centers, math stations, or another day.

My goal is always the same: meaningful literacy learning woven into activities that children enjoy!

So grab your copy of The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything, get ready to clomp, wiggle, shake, clap, nod, and BOO, and enjoy a little spooky learning with your students!

Happy Fall Teaching!

I’m Michele a retired educator who loved every minute of being in the classroom and creating an environment where students loved coming and materials were presented that inspired learning. After retirement 5 years ago I knew I wanted to stay connected to the classroom and education. I began pulling my materials together and creating resources for TpT. I hope you will peek at them!! Together my husband and I have raised three amazing sons who now are busy beginning families of their own. To date I only have one grandson but he is such a joy! My husband, miniature dachshund Rubee, and I love being on the water, boating and walking outside. So if you see sunglasses you know where we are!! Together we spend time at our lake house in Michigan and our winter home in Florida. We are creating so many wonderful memories.
