Back to School Book Companions

There is nothing like a good book and activities to welcome students back to school. With these delightful stories students will be able to make connections with their first day and the characters in the story. Each of these book companions include vocabulary, word work, writing and comprehensionmaking them perfect for planning the literacy portion of your day. I enjoy using the stories for Guided Reading. Each of these stories for Week One include a special focus on text to self, characters and of course a Back to School theme. By clicking on the stories below you will find all the special topics included. (morning greetings, emotions, school supplies, first day)

Jamie Lee Curtis and Laura Cornell share a delightful story My Brave Year of Firsts. Your children will love listening and then spending the day relating their firsts to those of the character in the story including the first day of school. It is ideal for Guided Reading with text to self and special focus on characters.

This story is absolutely perfect for your Back to School choice.  Shannon Olsen shares a delightful letter about what the students can expect for the school year. It supports all the “wishes” every student hopes their teacher will be… supportive, caring, exciting and more

The activities in this resource are perfect for that first week of school and my favorite part are the suggestions on morning greetings!! This resource fits perfectly into your literacy portion of the day and the story is ideal for guided reading. With vocabulary, word work, paragraph organizers, writing pages and comprehension focusing on text to self it provides an outlet for student discussion about back to school..  Lesson plans have now been added.

Jean Reagan and Lee Wildish have done it again.  This “how to” story will bring a smile to all as they listen. You are ready for the first day back to school but how about your teacher? I love the opportunities the story provides for text to self and text to world. This is ideal for Guided Reading and includes vocabulary, word work, paragraph organizers, writing, comprehension. It is perfect for introducing all the special events your class will celebrate throughout the year. It also contains activities for discovering facts about YOU the teacher. What do the students know, what do they wonder, what can you share? I suggest using this during the first week back to school.

I never get tired of reading this story to my class at the beginning of the year. It is a nice “ice breaker” to let them know that even teachers get a “little” nervous. I also like this story because it leads into talking about emotions. Some students seem leery to say they are nervous or scared but simple things in our life can cause these emotions and that is nothing to be ashamed of!! I suggest using this that first week of school as it provides opportunities for text to self and discussing how we all felt about returning to school. Because it includes vocabulary, word work, writing, and comprehension activities it fits perfectly with you literacy portion of the day and the story is ideal for Guided Reading. I also like the data collection activities. A way to embed a little math with your literacy.

These activities and craft focus on a favorite story by Laura NumeroffIf You Take A Mouse To School. They are perfect for the beginning of the school year, especial week one…If YOU go to school! Activities include ComprehensionWriting, and Word Work so it fits perfectly into the literacy portion of your day.

Back to school with the Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Books. Your kiddos will love this story! It is perfect for reading, singing, and retelling. Now with this resource you can enhance your literacy program with specific academic skills and provide interactive activities to keep students engaged and learning.

What is Duck up to this time? My class loves these stories and this one is just right for that week oneback to school. With vocabulary, word work, writing and comprehension activities it fits perfectly into the literacy section of your day. Best of all just like Duck is writing class rules you can review yours! And you will love the crafts for showcasing student writing.

I’m Michele a retired educator who loved every minute of being in the classroom and creating an environment where students loved coming and materials were presented that inspired learning. After retirement 5 years ago I knew I wanted to stay connected to the classroom and education. I began pulling my materials together and creating resources for TpT. I hope you will peek at them!! Together my husband and I have raised three amazing sons who now are busy beginning families of their own. To date I only have one grandson but he is such a joy! My husband, miniature dachshund Rubee, and I love being on the water, boating and walking outside. So if you see sunglasses you know where we are!! Together we spend time at our lake house in Michigan and our winter home in Florida. We are creating so many wonderful memories.
