The Power of Kindness

August 5, 2025 No Comments

Teaching literacy through a cross-curricular theme enriches reading and writing by connecting them to real-world topics and other areas of study. Instead of isolating literacy skills, students use them in meaningful contexts—like exploring science, social studies, or character education—making learning deeper and more relevant. These resources include Lesson for Guided Reading as well as “tech friendly” activities related to Kindness.

Benefits of Cross-Curricular Literacy Instruction:

  • Authentic Purpose for Reading and Writing:
Students read to learn about real topics and write to express ideas across subjects, giving their literacy work meaning beyond a reading block.
  • Stronger Vocabulary Development:
Themed content naturally introduces subject-specific vocabulary, which boosts comprehension and word usage.
  • Improved Comprehension:
Repeated exposure to a central topic across texts and activities helps students build background knowledge, make connections, and understand more deeply.
  • Enhanced Engagement:
Students are more motivated when reading and writing tasks relate to exciting themes like animals, weather, community, or kindness.
  • Integrated Skill Practice:
Students practice literacy strategies—like summarizing, questioning, comparing texts, and writing for different purposes—within meaningful content areas.
  • Preparation for Real-Life Learning:
In the real world, reading and writing rarely happen in isolation. Cross-curricular literacy mirrors how adults interact with information every day.

In essence, teaching literacy with a cross-curricular theme makes learning more engaging, relevant, and lasting.

I’m Michele a retired educator who loved every minute of being in the classroom and creating an environment where students loved coming and materials were presented that inspired learning. After retirement 5 years ago I knew I wanted to stay connected to the classroom and education. I began pulling my materials together and creating resources for TpT. I hope you will peek at them!! Together my husband and I have raised three amazing sons who now are busy beginning families of their own. To date I only have one grandson but he is such a joy! My husband, miniature dachshund Rubee, and I love being on the water, boating and walking outside. So if you see sunglasses you know where we are!! Together we spend time at our lake house in Michigan and our winter home in Florida. We are creating so many wonderful memories.
