Tacky Goes to Camp: From Fictional Fun to Fascinating Animal Facts!

October 22, 2026 No Comments

Who doesn’t love Tacky the Penguin? His silly adventures always bring laughter into the classroom, but Tacky Goes to Camp by Helen Lester offers something even more exciting—an opportunity to connect a favorite fictional story with real-world learning!

I’ve just updated my Tacky Goes to Camp Book Companion with two days of cross-curricular lessons that combine literacy, science, geography, writing, and math.

Day One: Let’s Go Camping with Tacky!

Students enjoy Tacky’s hilarious camping adventure while exploring story elements, sequencing, main idea, problem and solution, and author’s purpose. Colorful story cards, vocabulary activities, word work, writing opportunities, and a winter camping class poll make learning engaging and meaningful.

Day Two: Penguins, Bears, and the Facts!

Here’s where the learning takes an exciting turn!

In the story, a bear visits the penguins at camp. But could that really happen?

Students become animal detectives as they discover that polar bears live in the Arctic, some penguins live in Antarctica, and spectacled bears live in South America!

Using animal photographs, a world map, an informational mini reader, and fact-or-fiction activities, students explore animal habitats and discover why Tacky’s adventure is fiction.

One Story, So Many Learning Opportunities!

This newly updated resource includes flexible two-day lesson plans, reading comprehension, vocabulary, word work, differentiated math activities, writing organizers, informational reading, and much more.

Use the activities over two days, spread them throughout the week, or save extras for literacy centers and small-group instruction.

I love when a wonderful children’s book becomes the starting point for curiosity, questions, and new discoveries!

I’m Michele a retired educator who loved every minute of being in the classroom and creating an environment where students loved coming and materials were presented that inspired learning. After retirement 5 years ago I knew I wanted to stay connected to the classroom and education. I began pulling my materials together and creating resources for TpT. I hope you will peek at them!! Together my husband and I have raised three amazing sons who now are busy beginning families of their own. To date I only have one grandson but he is such a joy! My husband, miniature dachshund Rubee, and I love being on the water, boating and walking outside. So if you see sunglasses you know where we are!! Together we spend time at our lake house in Michigan and our winter home in Florida. We are creating so many wonderful memories.
