One Beloved Story, Two Days of Literacy, Science, and So Much More!
What happens when a little bat finds herself living with a family of birds? A wonderful opportunity to explore friendship, acceptance, differences, and the fascinating world of bats!
Stellaluna by Janell Cannon is a favorite read-aloud that opens the door to meaningful conversations, critical thinking, and exciting cross-curricular learning. My newly updated Stellaluna Book Companion brings together reading comprehension, vocabulary, word work, science, writing, and math in two engaging days of learning designed for Kindergarten, First Grade, and Second Grade.

Day One: Let’s Meet Stellaluna!
Students begin by activating prior knowledge with a morning opener and class poll before diving into this heartwarming story. Through guided reading and comprehension activities, they explore story elements, character traits, feelings, and supporting evidence.
One of my favorite connections is comparing bats and birds! Students discover how these animals are alike and different while developing an understanding of Stellaluna’s experiences.
Day Two: Let’s Become Bat Experts!
Now it’s time to spread our wings and explore nonfiction!
Students discover fascinating facts about bats, including what makes them mammals, why many are active at night, how echolocation works, and the important role bats play in our environment.
An informational mini reader, vocabulary activities, graphic organizers, and writing opportunities encourage students to read, investigate, and share their discoveries.
