Learning through a pumpkin!

Absolutely PUMPKIN season and what fun for students to use a pumpkin as a learning tool. You can begin by placing the colorful pumpkin vocabulary in the room and filling your library with special pumpkin stories. The resource has some wonderful suggestions for you. Next prepare your centers with: the 5 Little Pumpkin Poem and the interactive pieces that accompany it, Pumpkin Tic Tac Toe for partners, Parts of a Pumpkin for science. There is a mini book filled with informational text about the life cycle of the pumpkin. I love that each student can have their own book and highlight key vocabulary, use the text for creating sequence writing and reading and rereading. One of my favorites for science is All About My Pumpkin. I present each student with a “tiny pumpkin” and gift tag (provided). We then explore pumpkins. I have some cut open for students to observe and we review key vocabulary (rind, pulp, seed and explore where the blossom end began the pumpkin). There are activity sheets for students on the life cycle and parts of the pumpkin. Also included in this resource are word work activities ( ABC Order, Syllables and Making Words). Finally there are two math games one for addition to 12 and another subtraction to 12. There is a color copy for using and reusing and a black and white for sending home after students play for review and practice with family. I love using pumpkin seeds for markers. So all together you have covered reading, writing, vocabulary, science and math just using the seasons favorite…a pumpkin!! Take a peek at all the activities.

I’m Michele a retired educator who loved every minute of being in the classroom and creating an environment where students loved coming and materials were presented that inspired learning. After retirement 5 years ago I knew I wanted to stay connected to the classroom and education. I began pulling my materials together and creating resources for TpT. I hope you will peek at them!! Together my husband and I have raised three amazing sons who now are busy beginning families of their own. To date I only have one grandson but he is such a joy! My husband, miniature dachshund Rubee, and I love being on the water, boating and walking outside. So if you see sunglasses you know where we are!! Together we spend time at our lake house in Michigan and our winter home in Florida. We are creating so many wonderful memories.
