From CRANKY to HAPPY! Halloween Literacy Fun with Crankenstein!

October 7, 2026 No Comments

What happens when your favorite holiday turns into one frustrating disaster after another? Just ask Crankenstein!

Trick or Treat, Crankenstein! is such a fun story for bringing laughter, meaningful reading comprehension, character feelings, and a little Halloween magic into the classroom.

I love using children’s literature to connect learning across subjects, and this resource does just that! With a one-day literacy-focused lesson plan and plenty of additional activities, teachers can enjoy a purposeful read-aloud while having flexible choices for centers and continued learning.

Start with a Little Halloween Excitement!

Before opening the book, get students thinking with a Halloween morning opener.

What makes them HAPPY on Halloween? What might make them CRANKY? What is their favorite part of the holiday?

These simple questions encourage conversation and help students make personal connections before meeting Crankenstein.

Next, introduce a class poll:

Would you rather go trick-or-treating or attend a Halloween party?

Students make their choices, share their reasoning, and collect class data. Save the results for a little math fun later!

📚 Read, Laugh, and Discover Why Crankenstein Is So CRANKY!

As you read Trick or Treat, Crankenstein!, encourage students to notice how one disappointing event after another affects his feelings.

Pause to ask:

  • What happened to make Crankenstein cranky?
  • How did he react?
  • What would you do in his situation?
  • Do you think his feelings will change?

The included pumpkin comprehension cards help guide discussions, while sequencing, cause-and-effect, and character activities provide opportunities to revisit the story.

Teacher Tip: Choose just a few comprehension questions during the read-aloud. Save the additional cards and activities for small groups or literacy centers.

💚 From CRANKY to HAPPY!

This is one of my favorite parts of the resource!

Using the Cranky to Happy anchor chart, students explore how Crankenstein feels at the beginning of the story, what causes his frustration, and what eventually helps change his mood.

Then take the learning one step further with the Problem → Feeling → Reaction → Solution organizer.

Choose one of Crankenstein’s problems and work through it together. What happened? How did he feel? How did he react? What could he have done differently?

The When I Feel Cranky, I Can… anchor chart adds a meaningful connection to students’ everyday experiences. Taking a breath, asking for help, and talking about a problem are all strategies worth discussing!

It’s a wonderful opportunity to connect reading comprehension with social-emotional learning.

✏️ Organize, Write, and Create!

After exploring Crankenstein’s changing feelings, students are ready to put their thinking into writing.

Use the included organizer to help students plan their ideas before completing their writing response.

Then comes the FUN part!

Students create an adorable Frankenstein craft to accompany their writing. Those green faces, silly hair, and pumpkin candy buckets make such a cheerful Halloween display!

Teacher Tip: Prepare craft pieces ahead of time for younger students or save the craft for an afternoon activity. This allows plenty of time for meaningful reading and writing.

🎲 Turn That Frown Upside Down — Math Fun!

Who says Crankenstein has to stay in the literacy block?

The Turn That Frown Upside Down! partner game brings the Halloween theme into math!

Students roll two dice, find the sum, and determine whether it is odd or even. An even sum allows them to cover a dot on their game board, while an odd sum passes the turn to their partner.

It’s an easy way to practice addition, odd and even numbers, and taking turns.

🍎 So Many Ways to Use One Resource!

Although the included lesson plan focuses on one day of meaningful literacy instruction, the additional activities offer plenty of flexibility.

Use the sequencing and cause-and-effect pages in guided reading groups, character-feeling activities for independent practice, word work in literacy centers, and Halloween writing prompts for continued learning.

You don’t have to use every page! Choose the activities that best support your students, your schedule, and your instructional goals.

Why I Love This Resource

As a former first-grade teacher, I always appreciated resources that made learning meaningful without requiring hours of additional planning.

This book companion brings together so many things I love about teaching: wonderful children’s literature, thoughtful discussions, hands-on activities, writing, creativity, and a little laughter.

And perhaps the best lesson of all?

Even when things don’t go our way, we can find ways to turn a CRANKY day into a HAPPY one!

After retirement 5 years ago I knew I wanted to stay connected to the classroom and education. I began pulling my materials together and creating resources for TpT. I hope you will peek at them!! Together my husband and I have raised three amazing sons who now are busy beginning families of their own. To date I only have one grandson but he is such a joy! My husband, miniature dachshund Rubee, and I love being on the water, boating and walking outside. So if you see sunglasses you know where we are!! Together we spend time at our lake house in Michigan and our winter home in Florida. We are creating so many wonderful memories.
