Each week I pick one writing activity and create a class book. After the students have finished their “final write” I copy their writing and create book to put in our reading center for free reading choice time. These books are usually the most popular stories chosen. The students love reading each other’s stories.
In the past I just made a cover and stapled the writing pages together. This worked but because they are so loved and often read they fell apart quickly and were always tattered and torn.
I had a brainstorm. When the “back to school” supply sales came out I picked up 5 of the 1/2 inch binders. Now when we make a class book I add a little informational text, vocabulary and often a cute cutout for them to enjoy while reading. I punch the student writing pages and copy a cover to place inside the plastic cover. When it is time to change the book up I take the vocabulary, craft, text and cover and place it in a baggie for next year.
This has worked out so well!!
Each of my resources has writing activities that focus on engaging students through a story or informational text. These are always accompanied by vocabulary for posting. This way students can use text and vocabulary for helping them write. Pre writes are also included and completed, given a quick check by the teacher and then the final write is prepared. The first couple weeks this is a challenge for some students but I include differentiated writing pre writes and final write pages to meet the needs of all levels.
