If you read First Day Jitters at the beginning of the year your class will love Last Day Blues. It has a nice theme letting students know that even teacher get the blues about the last day of school. I also like this story because it leads into talking about memories and summer vacation.
Because it includes vocabulary, word work, writing, and comprehension activities it fits perfectly with your literacy portion of the day and the story is ideal for Guided Reading. I also like the data collection activities. A way to embed a little math with your literacy.
The resource includes:
Vocabulary
Word Work . . . abc order, syllables, making words (vacations), definition
Writing. . . Pre Writes, Graphic Organizers for gathering thoughts, Final Write Pages (I will miss most about this year: Last Day Blues)
Comprehension . . . Story Elements, Sequencing, Recall, Author’s Purpose, Main Idea and Story Problem
Last Day Blues Poem . . . Reading for Detail, Add own ideas to rewrite poem
